Process of Gravity Die Casting

It is very much different from high-pressure die casting and it is utilized for parts that have higher structural requirements than high pressure die casting, are slightly heavier, and larger.

Three different stages are involved in the process of gravity die casting:

Die Release Agent

In the aluminum gravity casting process there is the involvement of heating the mold and coating it with a spray chemical that aids in a release. There are multiple functions of this release agent like when the alloy part has been removed it also helps in cooling the surface of the die. In this way, it prepares the die for the next part of pouring.

Pouring the Metal

It is performed by pouring the metal into runners, which carry it to the different parts of the cavity. It also allows it to properly fill the space. There is a runner who is designated to ensure that the liquid fills the cavity from the bottom up, preventing turbulence in the hardened part as well as pores. Into a mold, a mechanical tool may pour the metal, or using ladles made of steel it may be performed by hand. 

Releasing the Part

The part will cool because of the heat-sinking effect of the die as well as the release agent spray coating it. The operator or a machine opens the die to release the part when it has cooled enough. At this particular point, in aluminum gravity die casting the solidified casting is processed so that it can remove the gates and runners that feed the molten metal into the die cavity.
